okay, so i have a question. i think i've mentioned in the past that i want to start a separate blog dedicated exclusively to music, considering that - let's face it - i'm a complete and total music nerd, and i like to flatter myself that my love and knowledge of music might help turn my friends (and admirers) onto some good new tunes themselves. originally i was thinking of keeping things simple and doing a text-only, journal-style blog ("this band rules! this band sucks!")but lately i've been gravitating more towards the idea of setting up an mp3 blog, like www.3hive.com or fluxblog (http://newflux.blogspot.com), that combines pithy commentary with (gasp!) actual music. so my question is this. firstly, what's the legality of doing something like this? do i need permission to put up individual mp3s before sharing them on a blog? what if i'm only posting them for a limited time or if i add a disclaimer that i'm willing to take them down immediately if the artist/label contacts me and doesn't want them up? i figure that in most cases it's good publicity for the smaller bands i'd be exposing, and i wouldn't be putting up full albums, just individual songs - plus links to the bands' sites and exhortations to support them by purchasing their albums. secondly, and perhaps more importantly, how difficult would this to be programming-wise? my web skills are piss-poor (as evidenced by the fact that i couldn't even hyperlink the URL for fluxblog above), and while i know that sites like blogspot have a lot of built-in capabilities that make things easier, i'm still afraid to plunge into anything that's too programming-heavy. my goal here would be writing and sharing music, not designing a website, so i'd want something with a relatively easy learning curve - any suggestions?
anyway, that's what i'm thinking of. i just figure that some of the music i listen to is too good to keep to myself.

so...... yeah. not the best weekend. i got stood up by the same girl, twice. first on friday, then again on saturday. i suppose the old adage rings true: "fool me once, shame on you. fool me twice, shame on me." in any case, i doubt i'll be seeing her any more. but somehow i'm walking away from this wohle thing feeling like I'M the jerk. which definitely isn't the case, at least not this time. anyway, it was probably for the better that my plans for friday were cancelled, because i could barely see straight from my headaches. i spent most of the evening reading one of the three books i've purchased about migraines, then spent an hour or so poking around online support communities for people who suffer from cluster headaches. if i sound as if i'm getting a little obsessive over this, i apologize sincerely. i suppose the best way i can describe it is like this: imagine you're in a room that's on fire. no matter what else you have to deal with or think about, if the room is on fire, you need to focus all your energy and attention on putting out the fire. that's how i feel about my headaches - i can't NOT pay attention to them. they trump just about everything. believe me, i'll be the happiest fella in the world when they're yesterday's news, which hopefully will be soon. in the meantime, i hope y'all don't mind about me constantly using my journal as a way to bitch and moan about it. but in all honesty this is a pretty intensely scary and depressing time for me and i need a way to vent - and hell, it's my journal, yes? besides, i'm long past thinking there's any sort of shame or stigma attached to my headaches, because i know that they're physical in nature and because i'm damn sure that if anybody else were in my shoes, getting headaches like the ones i get, they'd be panicking and freaking out too. that much i'm positive of. so the little piece of good news is, my neurologist appointment is 9 days away and counting. and in the meantime i'm doing my best to surround myself with positive-thinking, supportive people who are willing to cut me some slack if i haven't quite been myself lately. it's a little bit of solace to know that i've been through this once before and i'll be able to make it through this again, however fucking miserable and hellish it may be. but i'll say this - for all of you reading this, i hope from the bottom of my heart that you never, ever, ever get headaches like the ones i get. it's like nothing you could possibly imagine.
okay - now that i've vented, i've got a favor to ask all of you. asobi seksu made a video for the song "walk on the moon," which just got posted on mtv.com - pretty fucking huge. this is a REALLY critical week for us if we're going to get the video into constant rotation on mtv2, and a lot of the decision is based on mtv's stats of how many people view the video on their site. so if you (or your friends) have a few minutes, please please please go take a look at the video:
http://www.mtv.com/bands/az/asobi_seksu/artist.jhtml
since the band and i made this ourselves, and 99% of you probably haven't seen this before, you're in for a treat. i'm pretty proud of this. watch it over and over and help get asobi seksu on MTV2!

so in the midst of all the bad news (and believe me, there's been plenty - not the least of which is that i'm worried that i'm worried i'm developing some horrible neurologically degenerative disease), there are a few snippets of good news. i don't know if my plea worked and my livejournal readers went out and bought asobi seksu cds - and i'm not going to ask (so please don't tell me). but i do know that *somebody* is buying them, because the band and i have been getting fan letters from strangers across the country. not a ton of them, not burlap sacks full of them, but a few - enough to put a smile on my face. one guy in san francisco, who isn't personal friends with me or the band, even started an asobi seksu livejournal community asobiseksu. the reviews have started trickling in, slowly but surely, and there are more coming - the band just did a photo shoot with yellow rat bastard, and under the radar is about to do a feature. MTVu just aired their video (which is about to go up on their website), they have some really good shows lined up, and the album just went top 20 at college radio, which i'm pretty proud of. just the other day, out of the blue, a band from atlanta that i didn't even know approached me asking me to manage them.
am i bragging? shit yeah i'm bragging. considering that i've done this label pretty much entirely on my own, without any help, despite a 50 hour+ per week job, no money, and crippling headaches... well, i think i deserve a little pat on the back. go me.

Exercise guru Richard Simmons allegedly slapped a man who made a sarcastic remark about one of his videos, police said. Simmons, known for his "Sweatin' to the Oldies" series of exercise videos set to songs from the 1950s and 60s, was cited for misdemeanor assault. A fellow passenger recognized Simmons on Wednesday night at Phoenix's Sky Harbor International Airport as he was waiting for a flight to Los Angeles, police said. The man "made the off-hand comment, 'Hey everybody. It's Richard Simmons. Let's drop our bags and rock to the '50s,'" said Phoenix police Sgt. Tom Osborne. "Mr. Simmons took exception to it and walked over to the other passenger and apparently slapped him in the face." The passenger, whose identity wasn't immediately available, wasn't injured but told police that he intended to file charges against Simmons, 55. Osborne said Simmons was cited for misdemeanor assault and permitted to board his flight.

yeah, yeah, i'm sure that by now you're all familiar with danger mouse's amazing grey album, on which he remixes jay-z's black album using exclusively samples from the beatles' white album. i mean, you have to have been living under a rock to have not heard about this, considering all the press it's gotten recently. but did you know that one of the interludes on the grey album has been found to contain "satanic" messages fashioned out of jay-z's lyrics? i shit you not. read about it here: http://www.inhalerproductions.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12572&sid=2cdee7388644dcbf0a0849e33fce8744

p.s. after some consideration, i've decided that i AM going to create a separate journal for my ramblings about music, which means that this journal will basically be 95% friends-only from here on out. i don't know if i have the time or energy to put up a proper blog, a la the wonderful melodynelson.com, but at least i'll have a space to rant and rave about the music i love to my heart's content. i think it's fair to say that if there's one thing i know, it's music, and i like to flatter myself that at least a few people have discovered some new bands based on my recommendations. but who knows, maybe i'm just ego-trippin'.

I want to congratulate Gov. Dean on his campaign, his energy, his integrity, and his courage.
I am proud that Gov. Dean stands with me on so many issues: the urgency of bringing our troops home from Iraq, the critical need to provide health care to all our citizens, jobs, education, and hope for a better future. Together, we stand beneath that progressive banner, and, whatever role he chooses to play in the continuing dialogue, I intend to keep those dreams alive in my campaign.
To his supporters, I would say this: "If you love Howard Dean, you'll love Dennis Kucinich, too." If you are in touch with Dean supporters, please share this message with them.
We embrace and echo Gov. Dean's challenge to continue working for change in the Democratic Party and to take back the government of this nation so that it works for the benefit of its citizens, not its self-serving special interests and entrenched political power structure.
His grassroots supporters, like ours, represent a remarkable diversity of ages, races, and creeds - all united in the belief that government must change, and CAN change, if we commit ourselves, heart and soul, to that effort.
We must not abandon that vision, but rather, take it to the streets, to the meeting places, to the ballot boxes, and then on to the convention this summer where our vision can become the rebirth and renewal of the Democratic Party. I look forward to talking with Gov. Dean about the future of our Party.

hello friends. i am currently seeking an intern/assistant for friendly fire recordings, an independent, brooklyn-based record label with an upcoming release from outstanding new york shoegaze/new wave/indiepop band asobi seksu and a number of other projects in the works. the internship is unpaid (for now!) but offers a lot of plusses - i'm not looking for a gopher to make copies and get coffee but rather someone willing to actively participate in the growth and administration of the label. i'm searching for someone with impeccable musical taste, a hardworking and entrepreneurial work ethic, the ability to work from home (very important, as this will be an "off-hours" internship requiring independent work - i have a day job!), connections within the music industry (or the ability to go out and make 'em), passion, dedication, drive, brains, ability to rock out, etc. big things lay in the future for friendly fire and i'm seeking someone to help me in a very real and tangible way. please reply to info@friendlyfirerecordings.com for more information.
PLEASE REPOST!!!

hey everybody!
on january 22, thursday night (tomorrow night, or tonight, depending on when you're reading this) i'm putting on my FIRST EVER SHOW at pianos in the lower east side, in collaboration with kari bomb and dj boyracer, the kids who throw the weekly late-night "dutch" party. it's going to rock SO FREAKIN' HARD it hurts to think about it. two bands are playing - AKRON and BASTION. akron are phenomenal musicians, have a sort of chicago post-rock sea and cake type vibe, and are going to be joined by morgan from the blood brothers for this one night only. then local boys bastion (whose keyboardist and beloved man-about-town alex malfunction will be celebrating his birthday) are going to rock the stage in their inimitable style. think joy division meets the cure meets jesus and mary chain. those of you who know me well know that i'm a total musical snob and i wouldn't book these bands if they didn't completely rock. MOREOVER - i'm going to be throwing down the tunes upstairs with dj boyracer ALL NIGHT LONG, and since this is my first dj gig of 2004 and i'm itchy to impress, i'm really going to be breaking out the big guns.
the fun begins at 11:00 - yes, this is a late night party. don't give me any crap about having work the next day, i have work the next day too - THIS IS NEW YORK CITY, LIVE A LITTLE! WOOOOOHOOOOOOO
pianos is on stanton and ludlow. it's, like, the hipster mecca. come pay homage to the almighty ROCK! AND! ROLL!
